Free Online Training Courses for Journalists

A limited number of free places are available for two online courses -

* Intermediate Website Development
* Introduction to TV News Reporting

produced by the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association and the Thomson Foundation.

The courses involve 12 weekly modules and an online discussion forum from Friday May 9th 2008 to Friday July 25th 2008.

Participants will study each module for up to an hour with approximately one hour additional work per week on written assignments which will be emailed to the tutors.

The courses are free of charge, but places are limited. Application details and forms are available on the Thomson Foundation website.

What does it mean to be Australian in 2007? How do we as Australians see ourselves? How are we as a nation, culture and society, perceived by others? How have recent actions and policies affected attitudes within Australia and the perception of other people of Australia? The former Prime minister will also discuss the implications of independence as a state.

Sponsored by the Commonwealth Round Table Australia (CRTA) in collaboration with the International Relations Department, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (RSPAS) at the ANU.

Rural Writing Award

If you wrote the best article of wide agricultural interest published in NSW or the ACT in 2006, why not enter it in the NSW Farm Writers 2007 Star prize. It's an international competition with the local winner being helped to attend the International Federation of Agriculture Journalists (IFAJ) World Congress in Japan in September.

Dental award

The Australian Dental Association is offering a $10,000 Award for Excellence in Dental Journalism in the mainstream media. It is not open to the specialist media. Nominations close on Friday 12 January 2007.

EU-Qantas award

The winner of the 2006 European Union - Qantas Journalist Award will be announced at the National Press Club in Canberra this evening.
