Libraries Australia online

Online access to the combined catalogues of all the major libraries in Australia is now up and working. It is called Libraries Australia and is accessed through the National Library of Australia site. A few searches for material known to exist shows that the service throws up most of the hits at major libraries, with a few surprises at less well known libraries. It is certainly quicker than searching individual library catalogues.

MIA 118 out

The journal Media International Australia February 2006 issue (no 118) with the theme Creativity and Practice-led Research has been published and is being posted to subscribers.

iAwards 2006 close

The Australian Information Industry Association iAwards close today. Finalists will be announced 2 March and winners 7 April 2006.

Entries for the 2006 Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism are now open. Australian freelancers in print journalism can enter for one of the $10,000 awards. The deadline for entries is 1 June 2006

German internships

Deutsche Welle (Germany’s ABC/BBC) has two internships for radio journalists in Bonn in its English language department and one in the Online Service. The internships are for six months, are salaried, and DW pays return airfares. Entries close on Friday 10 February 2006.

Convergence book

Australian journalist Stephen Quinn’s new book The Convergent Journalism Handbook: Writing and Producing Across Media (Boston, Focal Press, 2005 ISBN 0 240 8072 3 AUD 70.00) is now available. It’s a practical and up-to-date guide for reporters and subs working in a multimedia newsroom.

Sports broadcasters book

Also concentrating on convergence is the new edition of Bradley Schultz’s Sports Media: Reporting, Producing and Planning (Boston, Focal Press, 2005, ISBN 0 240 80731 6 AUD 54.00). It’s the only text I know on sports broadcasting and reporting.

Osteoporosis awards

Entries for the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) 2005 Journalism Awards close tomorrow 31 January 2006. Winners of the top two of the 20 prizes get USD 5,000 plus an all-expenses paid trip to Toronto.

Media Report resumes

The Media Report proper resumes tomorrow at 8.30 am on ABC Radio National with a look at how the media treated Kerry Packer's demise. You can listen to it live over the web here and the podcast/MP3 audio and transcripts are available very quickly after broadcast.

UNESCO has just published Net for Journalists: a practical guide to the internet for journalists in developing countries by UK journalist Martin Huckerby. It is 141 pages of good, practical, basic advice and is a free download from here.

Snitcher Desk is a new place to sell you cameraphone newsworthy shots online. Two others are Scoopt and Spy Media. Lulop handles sales of video footage online. Scoopt is based in the UK and the rest in the USA.

International awards for women journalists

The International Women’s Media Foundation is seeking nominations from around the world for its 2006 Courage in Journalism Awards and Lifetime Achievement Award. Nominations close on 15 March 2006 and the results are announed in May.

Words & Images Award

An interesting new journalism award organised by Commonwealth Press Union to celebrate and fuse the crafts of writing and photojournalism is now open for entries. The theme for the competition is 'the forgotten commonwealth' and details are here. It is backed by Rolls-Royce and closes on 30 April 2006.

World press photo award

Entries for the 49TH World Press Photo Award close tomorrow. Winner announced on 10 February 2006.

Press freedom report

The MEAA is looking for input for its 2006 Press Freedom Report. Submissions must be in by the end of February 2006. The inaugural 2005 Press Freedom Report can be downloaded here.
