Libraries Australia online
Online access to the combined catalogues of all the major libraries in Australia is now up and working. It is called Libraries Australia and is accessed through the National Library of Australia site. A few searches for material known to exist shows that the service throws up most of the hits at major libraries, with a few surprises at less well known libraries. It is certainly quicker than searching individual library catalogues.

German internships
Deutsche Welle (Germany’s ABC/BBC) has two internships for radio journalists in Bonn in its English language department and one in the Online Service. The internships are for six months, are salaried, and DW pays return airfares. Entries close on Friday 10 February 2006.

Australian journalist Stephen Quinn’s new book The Convergent Journalism Handbook: Writing and Producing Across Media (Boston, Focal Press, 2005 ISBN 0 240 8072 3 AUD 70.00) is now available. It’s a practical and up-to-date guide for reporters and subs working in a multimedia newsroom.
Sports broadcasters book
Also concentrating on convergence is the new edition of Bradley Schultz’s Sports Media: Reporting, Producing and Planning (Boston, Focal Press, 2005, ISBN 0 240 80731 6 AUD 54.00). It’s the only text I know on sports broadcasting and reporting.

International awards for women journalists
The International Women’s Media Foundation is seeking nominations from around the world for its 2006 Courage in Journalism Awards and Lifetime Achievement Award. Nominations close on 15 March 2006 and the results are announed in May.

An interesting new journalism award organised by Commonwealth Press Union to celebrate and fuse the crafts of writing and photojournalism is now open for entries. The theme for the competition is 'the forgotten commonwealth' and details are here. It is backed by Rolls-Royce and closes on 30 April 2006.
